PepsiCo Trying to Pass Off Junk Food as Healthy

PepsiCo Trying to Pass Off Junk Food as Healthy - Recipe Healthy

Beverage and food companies are cashing in on the emerging healthy eating trend in the U.S. Most people are still misinformed about healthy eating, but is Pepsi taking it to the next level by insulting the intelligence of the American consumer and insisting that junk food is healthy?
In an interview on Fox Business Channel’s American Icon, PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi declared that “Doritos are not bad for you” and are “nothing more than corn mashed up, fried up in oil, and flavored in the most delectable way.” Nooyi goes on to say that soda is also not bad for your health.
What’s Inside a Bag of Doritos?

A large bag of Doritos contains 1,350 calories with 162 grams of carbs. If that’s not enough to discourage you from snacking on Doritos, here’s what’s inside every chip:
•    Artificial flavor and colorings, including Yellow 5, Yellow 6, and Red 40
Yellow 5 can trigger hypersensitivity, hyperactivity, and other behavioral problems in children. Yellow 6 can cause adrenal tumors and hypersensitive reactions in animals. Red 40 has been found to accelerate the growth of immune system tumors in mice.

•    Corn syrup solids or fructose
Fructose is a major contributor to the obesity epidemic plaguing America. It can cause weight gain, contribute to heart disease and liver damage, deplete your body of nutrients, disrupt your metabolism, and elevate your blood pressure and triglycerides.

•    Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
MSG is a known excitotoxin, a substance that overexcites your cells to the point of damage or death and can cause different levels of brain damage. It can potentially trigger or worsen conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, learning disabilities, Lou Gehrig’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease, Dr. Joseph Mercola warns.

•    Partially hydrogenated oils
The process of creating hydrogenated oils produces trans fats, a dangerous type of fat associated with numerous diseases, including bone problems, cancer, and heart disease. Government scientists determined that man-made trans fats are unsafe at any level. Doritos’ label indicates that it contains 0 grams of trans fats. However, food manufacturers are allowed to round off to zero any ingredient that accounts for less than 0.5 grams per serving. This means a serving of Doritos can have 0.49 grams of trans fats and still be listed as 0. You’ll still be ingesting a measurable amount of trans fats if you consume several servings of these tortilla chips.

Junk Food Can Never Become Health FoodSometime in 2011, PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay brand will introduce “all-natural” junk food by removing artificial colors, MSG, and other chemicals from certain varieties of their snack chips and other products. It’s still unclear, though, whether Doritos will be affected by the changes.
The new Tropoli’s squeezable fruit pouches, which will be sold under the Tropicana brand, are also touted free of artificial flavors and high fructose corn syrup. But since it’s nothing more than glorified fruit puree concentrate, it will still yield a large amount of fructose, the worst type of sugar you can consume.

Ditching MSG, high fructose corn syrup, and other artificial additives is a step in the right direction, but it doesn’t mean that PepsiCo products qualify as health foods, Dr. Mercola points out.
Look beyond the deceptive marketing and don’t settle for processed foods and inferior food products. Evaluate your food budget and set aside 90 percent of it for real, whole foods like free-range and grass-fed meat, healthy oils, nuts, raw dairy, seeds, and vegetables. Putting a premium on food quality will allow your body to thrive and not merely survive.

Your appearance, energy levels, mood, and many other health aspects will likely improve when you eat according to your unique Nutritional Type. Find out the foods your body is designed to consume by taking Dr. Mercola’s Free Nutritional Typing test.
